Yep, I often recall my Old Man's comment: "it beats the alternative".

I never thought it would be meaningful to me sooo personally, but with all the health related issues, I often end a recounting of my current situation with that line, and folks suddenly seem to get it (ie, it's not as bad as it sounds).

Glad to hear so many of us are familiar with that great Borscht Belt refrain...my Dad (Brooklyn born and raised) learned it from his father and passed it on to me...I never get tired of it...

"How you doin', Dad?"

"Ah, my back hurts, I got a touch of the arthritis..."

"That sucks, dad"

"yeah, but it beats the alternative."

Hey GC--that does INDEED sound like a NY phrase...my dad picked it up in the 30s working in So Cal in the auto industry, but imagine it was from some displaced NYorker having arrived in the Golden State...
